You should make sure that your tank is large enough that is at least about 30 square inches of surface area per inch of fish. Also increase the size of the tank by 50 to 100 percent before you add more fish. Another thing is that you should not wait for the tank to look dirty. By the time it looks bad to you, the fish are already living in dangerous conditions for quite some time. Carry out regular partial water changes for keeping the water clean at all times. You should also test regularly for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrate for ensuring that water does not just look clean but that it is safe for the fish also.
